A man who disguised as a Christian preacher was, on Thursday, nearly mobbed when he was discovered to be in possession of a human skull in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The preacher, dressed in white garment, going about preaching at the top of his voice and receiving money from people in return, was arrested at the Agbowo Junction.
The preacher was said to have concealed a human skull in a polythene bag which he carried with him.
A source told LEADERSHIP FRIDAY that a man had approached the preacher to pray for him and after doing so, both of them parted ways. But a few seconds after they parted, the man called the preacher and, just as he made as if to give him some money, forcefully grabbed the polythene bag and let the skull drop.
A mob, having been attracted by the shocking discovery, descended on the fake preacher and beat him within an inch of his life.
But for the intervention of policemen attached to the Kajorepo Police Division, the fake preacher would have been beaten to death or set ablaze.
He was later taken to the police station.
When LEADERSHIP FRIDAY visited the police station, the policemen confirmed the arrest but insisted that only the police public relations officer (PPRO), SP Olabisi Ilobanafor, could speak on the incident.
In another development, a man pretending to be mad was arrested around the same area, after the police had been alerted that he was suspected to be play-acting.
He was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station. The sum of N10,000, four mobile phones, two University of Ibadan student identity cards, two knives, 20 cartridges, one locally made powder cartridges, a driver’s licence, different photo passports and banners were some of the things found in his possession.
Ilobanafor disclosed that since the incident occurred, members of the public have been “lynching any mad man suspected to be ritualist,” adding that 10 of them were rescued, while two others were unlucky.
