Lagos Bridge: Motorists Advise Contractor

Lagos – Motorists and commuters plying the Dopemu-Egbeda and Iyana-Ipaja Bridges in Lagos have urged the contractor rehabilitating the closed bridges to work at night to minimise current hardships on the road.

Reports state that the Lagos State Government had announced that the bridges on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway would each be closed for 10 days.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) commenced rehabilitation work on the Dopemu Bridge on March 15, causing serious gridlock in the area.

Work on the Dopemu Bridge would be completed on March 24, while the Iyana-Ipaja Bridge would be closed from March 25 to April 5.

Motorists, who now encounter nerve-wracking traffic in the area, suggested that the contractor should work at night because the re-routing by the government had neither facilitated flow of traffic nor reduced the congestion in the area.

One of the drivers, Mr Kamilu Ogundipe, said the rehabilitation should not be done during the day because it would complicate the traffic situation in the area.

“You know the volume of traffic here is high because it is a residential area, the closure has added to our suffering.

“This kind of work should have been better done at night, considering when there will be light human and vehicular traffics.’’

He said that people involved in emergency situations would need to get to their destinations on time and if they were delayed in traffic it could lead to loss of lives.

“In an emergency situation, people can lose their live here; we want to urge the government to direct the contractors to work at night,’’ he said.
