Akwa United’s Namso Edo continued his impressive form this season after scoring his side’s first goal – his third of the season from three games- to put them on the way to glory against Kaduna United at the weekend.
Emmanuel Enize grabbed the second goal to seal the victory for the home side, placing them on seven points from three games ahead of Lobi Stars, Crown FC and FC Taraba who are all on six points.
In Ibadan, Crown FC edged their visitors; Dolphin of Portharcourt 2:1 in a closely contested encounter.
Crown have six points from possible nine but have a tough task on their hands as they travel to Port Harcourt for a week 4 showdown with Sharks at the weekend.
Lobi Stars proved they are a force to reckon with this season as they defeated Gombe United 2:0 at the Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina Ala on Sunday.
Both sides went to the break goalless but the Makurdi side raced ahead in the 70th minute when Terkaa Melai stepped forward to convert from 12 yards after the away side were penalized for handling the ball in the box.
15 minutes later, John Paul headed home the second to ensure that Lobi secured the maximum points to put them in contention for continental engagement next season.
Unlike in Makurdi, Enugu Rangers had to fight hard for their first win of the season at home to reigning league champions, Kano Pillars at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Saturday.
After going into the interval 1:1, the Flying Antelopes rallied round to edge the reigning champions through Osas Christian.
Rangers, now on three points from two matches, will next go away to Giwa FC (if readmitted) next week at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos.
Sharks of Portharcourt were able to hold their hosts; Heartland FC to a goalless draw on Friday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium,Owerri. The Naze Millionaires are still without a win in the three week old Glo Premier League.
The game was not action packed and the whole of the first half was characterized with disjointed passes with both sides left with only half chances to score.
In a game without any clear cut chance, Heartland’s only opportunity at goal was harshly overruled in the first half.
Heartland head to Gombe United with a positive result a priority if they are to stir clear of the relegation zone while Sharks will welcome Crown of Ogbomosho to Port Harcourt.
New comers in the Nigeria Premier League, FC Taraba continued their good form at home after they dispatched El Kanemi Warriors 1-0 in the week three match played in Jalingo on Saturday.
El Kanemi came into the match with a very strong pedigree having narrowly missed the title last season and they began the match controlling the midfield and striving hard to get the first goal. However, FC Taraba stood their ground and got a reward in the 35th minute when Iyorhe Lute volleyed home the only goal of the game.
The boys from Jalingo now have six points from three matches to keep pace with the top guns at the top of the log.
